Writing an effective blog is more than just typing up a few paragraphs. You need to capture your readers attention and curiosity while also keeping their interest! The goal by the end of your post – have your followers become interactive with your blog and post comments or questions.

So what can you do to prepare a good blog post?

1: Capture Interest – When you’re writing your post, you need to make sure the post creates interest so it will be read. In the Real Estate market some topics might be dull but if you pick topics that will spur interest you will have a better retention rate. Keep in mind too that you need to be interested in your topic as well otherwise the post will be very flat. Write about market trends, hyper-local area information, restaurants/shopping or other community events.

2: Create catchy titles – Titles sell! For example Blue Mountain Estates – while direct might be a bit dull, however titling a post ‘Gateway to Northern Virginia – Blue Mountain Estates’ has more appeal and evokes interest. Remember to also include geographical references  in your titles as this will boost your blogs SEO. NEVER use a listing addresses for a title…ever!

3: Make it scannable – Scannable content is simply content that is formatted to be read with ease. By utilizing the criteria below you can make your post more pleasurable to read.

  • bolded font
  • sub-headers
  • tables
  • numbered or bulleted lists
  • photos and video

4: Write personal articles – Along with information on your market and business write some personal pieces! Blogs unlike webpages are more casual so include your views or opinions – this is a great way to get readers to become interactive with your posts as well.

5: Use images – Images are a great way to add diversity to your blog post and most people enjoy seeing an image and making a connection. Photos can also be tagged with keywords relevant to your post which will boost your blogs SEO.Videos can also be included; they too can be tagged with appropriate keywords.

6: Don’t make it too long – Don’t lose the interest of your reader by making a very long post, break it up into multiple posts if necessary. Post should be no longer than 300-500 words. This will also help you build up your post archive for more relevant, searchable articles.

7: Discussion – At the end of your post, try to encourage some feedback. By generating discussion you create interest in your posts, which may lead to a relationship that results in business.

There is no substitution for good writing but adding some of these points will make a good post – a great post!

Please share with us some of the things you do on your blog posts that help you stand out.

There are several points to remember when creating or maintaining a blog. If you are looking to start a blog you should know that it is important to brand your name or business to your blog and for you “pro-bloggers” you may want to revamp your existing blog to promote your image/profession better. So here it is my list of blogging musts:

Name of your Blog – the name of your blog is very important, especially if you are concentrating on writing hyper local content posts. If you are just starting to blog take a few minutes to think about what topic your blog posts will revolve around, it may be easier to choose a title after you start writing a few blog post drafts (before posting them). If you already blog and wish to change the name of your blog, look back at your posts and choose a title from a more generalized standpoint. Ex. NJ Real Estate Tips or Essex County Homes and Estates – again depending on the topics of your posts.

Call to Action in Footers – if you are using WordPress as your blogging platform you can include footers in your post, which briefly explain what your blog article is about. This gives you a great opportunity to entice your readers to browse further through your post and your blogging archive, if included.

Outbound Links – these are links to other resources or websites outside of your blog post. Typically in a post you will include a little information or explanation of a resource and then use hyper-linked text within your post to link to the original content in which you got your information.

Interlinking Posts – for those of you who do not understand what this means, interlinking posts means you support information and facts in a blog post with content from another one of your posts. By interlinking your posts you not only boost the SEO of your blog but also offer your readers useful links to more information through YOUR blog.

Blog Archive – this is a great tool to have especially if you are an avid blogger. By creating a blog archive you now show that you are an organized professional that offers the highest quality services to your clients. If you had the knowledge to include such a user-friendly “blog directory” you are well on your way to having a productive blog!

Why Guest Blog?

Guest blogging can be a rewarding experience and help you reach a new audience, provide you some valuable inbound links and build your reputation as an expert in your field. For any agent building your authority and sphere of influence is a valuable asset.  Each day Social Media becomes a stronger tool for the Agent’s arsenal.  There is a lot of potential for the Real Estate Professional to leverage Social Networking and Guest Blogging can be another tool to use.

But done wrong it can be a disaster.

Both the host and guest can gain some valuable benefits from the partnership.  Another note worthy point is the audience on the host blog also benefits from the fresh new content and the varied perspectives guest bloggers have.

So how does one guest blog?  Here are some tips:

  1. Research – Before you write your first post do a little research on the blog you are guesting for.  See what had been posted recently so you can avoid duplication.
  2. Topics – Make sure what you write about aligns with the blog’s theme.  It might be a good idea to ask the host blog what topics might be good or run by the post you think you want to do before hand.
  3. Sell yourself, but not too much – Work out a byline for yourself or a small paragraph about yourself, but be courteous and do not over sell yourself.
  4. Back links – Absolutely try to get a back link to your blog when you post your article.
  5. Value – Add some value to the post you are writing.  Writing a quality post will help get you more opportunities.
